4. Road Journey Planning

4.1) Are all journeys planned by the quickest route?

The advanced options button in the ‘Find a car route’ allows you to select a number of different parameters for your journey. So you can now plan your journey by the:

  • Quickest route
  • Shortest route
  • Most fuel economic
  • Cheapest overall (Taking into account toll roads and ferry charges)

Just by selecting your preferred option from the drop down menu marked ‘Type of journey’.

4.2) How do I avoid particular roads?

You can choose to avoid particular roads when planning your car/taxi journey by clicking ‘Advanced options’ at the bottom of the input pages and typing up to six roads or motorways that you would like to avoid into the box(es) (e.g. M6, or, A23). Transport Direct will, where possible, avoid these roads when planning your journey.

4.3) How do I choose particular roads to use?

You can choose to use particular roads when planning your car/taxi journey by clicking ‘Advanced options’ at the bottom of the input pages and typing up to six roads or motorways that you would like to use into the box(es) (e.g. M6, or, A23). Transport Direct will, where possible, use these roads when planning your journey.

4.4) How do I avoid all motorways?

You can find a car/taxi route that avoids motorways by clicking ‘Advanced options’ at the bottom of the input pages and ticking the (avoid) ‘motorways’ boxes.

4.5) How do I find a car/taxi route that avoids all tolls or ferries?

You can find a car/taxi route that avoids tolls and ferries by clicking ‘Advanced options’ at the bottom of the input pages and ticking the (avoid) ‘tolls’ and/or ‘ferries’ boxes.

4.6) How do you calculate car journey times?

The car journey results on Transport Direct take into account the appropriate speed levels and the estimated traffic speeds for the time, day and type of roads in the journey. Where possible we base this on specific, historic information about past traffic levels. Where this information is not available we base our estimations on the National Traffic Model. The additional information about particular roads is based on past traffic measurements provided by the Highways Agency, the Welsh Assembly and the Scottish Government.
